Watched the Opening Ceremony in Athens tonight - a spectacular show, especially considering the widespread cynicism that the whole thing would be ready in time.
Couldn't help but feel a twinge of sadness though. Well, not sadness, more fondness, as two years ago we in Manchester were the centre of the athletics universe for a fortnight.
The Commonwealth Games were very, very special and I'll never forget the feeling of pride and confidence that swamped the city. I wrote some good stuff about it at the time, and I'll try and dig it out.
(Heh, I've just been re-reading some of it. I particularly love the title, a play on the official slogan - "17 Sports. 72 Nations. 1 Big Party.")

Today is also a big Happy Birthday to...... me.
(32, not that it's any of your business you nosey so and so's.)
I think it was a marvellous gesture by the entire sporting world to have a great big ceremony to mark my birthday, no doubt in recognition to my amazing on-ice prowess with the Aardvarx (one goal, numerous assists, surprisingly few penalties, surprisingly many injuries). And since they're all sporty type who were honouring me tonight, I reckon they should stick around for a couple of weeks and have a few contests and such.... it'd be silly not to really...
