Well, it's New Year's Eve. The end of 2004, and the arrival of 2005 is upon us. First and foremost, may I wish you all a Happy New Year, and give to you all a saying once given to me: "may the best of your past be the worst of your future". (That one took me a while to figure out it was a positive thing and not a curse for all time - I ain't that bright, y'know....)
2004 has certainly been one heck of a year, both in and out of the Phoenix camp. Carl's family grew by one with the arrival of his daughter Rachel, Phoenix made it through their first season all the way to the Play-Off Finals weekend, and I passed my Level 2 EIHA Coaching course. Then Phoenix are forced to take a season out, and a huge question mark still hangs over our future as a hockey team as we end 2004 with no news on our own rink. Our players scatter to the winds, our fans forge allegiances with other teams to keep up their hockey fix, and our office remains ever silent, bound by business until such a time as they can open their mouths and spread a little relief amongst us all.
Then over 100,000 people die in what has to rank as one of the worst natural disasters in human history, and it kind of puts everything into perspective.
No matter what 2005 brings to us all, whether it's a new rink with a revived Phoenix or a pile of ashes from which no fire-bird can rise, some people won't see 2005. So when midnight comes around, I for one will be thankful to still be here to see what challenges and opportunities the new year brings.
Peace to all, have a great time marking the new year, and may your gods smile on you throughout 2005.
Rev.
