The skinny on the new season's roster.....

Tonight I took a phone call from the Manchester Phoenix Managing Director, Neil Morris. Neil's a great guy, he's always been upfront me with, and I honestly believe that he's one of the most genuine people in British ice hockey today. (That's not to diss anyone else, just to show that Neil's a top bloke!)

Anyhoo, the news that Neil gave me was about Paul Heavey and his recent trip to Canada for an Advanced Coaching Seminar. Now, speaking from my own limited experience, an Advanced Coaching Seminar sounds like it's probably one of the toughest seminars on the face of the planet. On the weekend that the Manchester Storm team were locked out of the MEN Arena for the final time, I took my Level One EIHA coaching course. I passed, but I'm sure that my brain hasn't been the same since. I think a part of it got worn out that weekend. So I have even more respect to Paul Heavey for putting himself through an Advanced Coaching Seminar. Yes I know he's been a coach a lot longer than I have, yes I know he's got oodles more coaching experience than I have, but heck, if the Level One did that much damage to my cerebral cortex then I tip my hat to an Advanced Coaching Seminar attendee...

Whilst he's been over there, Mr Heavey has been indulging in that favourite pastime of the ice hockey coach. No, not golf - scouting. Apparently Paul has come back to Britain with a pile of paperwork and data on a bunch of players that he will sift through in the search for the right on-ice talent for the Phoenix. Paul has already been busy assembling the "backbone" of the team (as Neil calls it), and we should expect some player signing news within a few weeks! Woohoo!
