New Game

EA Sports have just released the latest version of their NHL series for PS2, XBox and PC.

As usual, EA have gone for total accuracy and incorporated all the latest stats and players for the NHL, plus some of the other teams around the world.

In fact, the game is so totally accurate, then you select your two teams, click on "Play", and once the loading screen disappears you are locked out until a new CBA is settled.

During the intervals in the WCH Final earlier this week, Ron MacLean of 'Hockey Night In Canada' had the unenviable task of interviewing the legal representative of the NHL whilst another reported in a different location interviewed a represesentative of the NHL Players Association. The discussion bounced back and forth about the proposals that were on the table to settle the dispute and avert a lock-out.

Talk about going round the houses.

The notion that in this day and age two allegedly professional bodies can't get together and sort out a problem that threatens the very existence of both of them is quite frankly staggering. Look at it logically - if there is a lockout, there will be no ice hockey players taking to the ice in the NHL, which means a) no teams, and b) no Players to be in the Players Association. The clubs will exist on paper only - they certainly won't be represented out on the playing surface unless the league takes the incredible step of ignoring the NHLPA and bringing in non-member players.

But the bit that stuck in my mind was the notion being put forward that "we aren't talking about a salary cap. We're talking about a luxury tax, with players' remuneration coming under that heading."

Luxury tax? Luxury tax?! All I have to say to that is this:

In a hockey game, players aren't a luxury, they're a necessity! Now GET IT SORTED! DAGNAMMIT!

And to think that in previous seasons we've said on these shores that the BNL and ISL needed their heads knocking together. At least they both carried on playing.
