The weekend in Sheffield went fairly well, all in all. The coaching course was fairly intensive stuff, with plenty of follow-up reading to be done before I complete the exam and pop it in the post to get assessed. It was good to see so many people taking the course - there were about 24 of us there in total, including ex Phoenix player Aaron Davies and a chap by the name of Phil Cooper, who is my 'opposite number' on the Flintshire Falcons, a team that we Aardvarx have played a few times now. It was all very friendly and informative, and the knowledge of the instructors (Erskine Douglas, Tony Hall and Dave Graham) was impressive.
The only downer to the course was the venue.
I know I was pre-warned, but I think I'm not alone in saying that the Queen's Road rink is a bit of a shed. And this is from someone who played out of Altrincham.
Still, venue aside, the course was a great experience, and I only hope that I can put what I've learned into practice and guide the Aardvarx on to glory! (It may happen!)
Whilst in Sheffield, I took the opportunity to see the Steelers versus Giants game on Saturday night (with the assistance of the Manchester Phoenix ticket offer, ably executed by Mags and the Phoenix Office - cheers guys). It was good to be back at an EIHL game again, and especially good to see both George Awada and Jayme Platt out there on the ice. George's goal against Jayme was a cracker! It was a little weird being there as a neutral.... or rather as someone whose own team wasn't there - I don't think it's possible for me to watch a live game as a true neutral as I always end up supporting one team or the other! But if anything it futhered my resolve to see games whenever I get the chance to this season - even though Phoenix aren't on the road this season, there's nothing stopping us fans from getting out there!
